A piece of sitcom history is getting a makeover for the reality-TV era.
Discovery Inc.’s HGTV bought the Southern California home featured on “The Brady Bunch” TV show in the 1970s to use on a home-improvement show. The cable network was vying with ’N Sync star Lance Bass to acquire the property, which is located in the Studio City area of Los Angeles.
“I’m excited to share that HGTV is the winning bidder and will restore the Brady Bunch home to its 1970s glory as only HGTV can,” Discovery Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav said on a conference call Tuesday. “More detail to come over the next few months, but we’ll bring all the resources to bear to tell safe, fun stories with this beloved piece of American TV history.”
The house was used for exterior shots of “The Brady Bunch,” which aired from 1969 to 1974, but not for interior scenes. It was listed at $1.85 million.
Bass said earlier this week that he thought he won the auction. The singer said he was “heartbroken” to miss out on the property.
“There’s another corporate buyer (Hollywood studio) who wants the house at any cost,” he said on social media Sunday, before HGTV announced it had secured the house. “How can I compete with a billion-dollar corporate entity?”
When he learned that the buyer was HGTV, Bass said he didn’t resent the network: “I’d be pretty upset if it were anyone else,” he said on Twitter. “My television is stuck on that channel.”
