Brexit High Rollers Bet On Remain

A William Hill Plc client wagered 60,000 pounds ($87,000) on U.K. voters opting to stay in the European Union in a June 23 vote, adding to a string of large bets on the “Remain” side.

The gambler from Leeds in northern England stands to win 24,000 pounds if the bet is successful, the bookmaker said in an e-mail in London on Tuesday. More than 70 percent of all bets have been for “Leave,” while 73 percent of all money staked on the referendum is for “Remain,” the company said.

“While the high-rollers fancy ‘Remain’, the smaller money clients are overwhelmingly backing ‘Leave,’” Graham Sharpe, a William Hill spokesman, said.

A London-based woman bet 100,000 pounds on “Remain” at odds of 2/5, which will return 140,000 pounds if the bet is successful, the company said. William Hill odds put a 73 percent chance of the U.K. opting to stay in the EU even as some recent polls give Brexit supporters the lead.
